THE CHEST AND HEART ASSOCIATION OF BANGLADESH
The Chest & Heart Association of Bangladesh was started in 1974 with 7 (seven) life members and 20 (twenty) general members to exchange knowledge, experience and views relating to scientific affairs of respiratory medicine, thoracic surgery, cardiology & cardiac surgery among doctors. Founder president was late National Professor Nurul Islam. At present the association has been expanded with 395 life members and fairly large number of general members. As per constitution of The Chest and Heart Association of Bangladesh, executive committee meeting had been held at 03(three) months interval. In last year 04(four) executive meetings were conducted. Obituary notice has been circulated from the association on death of one member in last year.
Chest & Heart Journal:
Chest & Heart Journal is an official publication of the association. It is being published regularly on July and January session. It is one of the oldest medical journals of the country. The Journal is distributed to the life and general members of the Association, all the doctors of NIDCH as well as all Post-graduate Institutes, BSMMU, National Health Library, ICDDRB and all other related health institutions of the country.
Recently the get up & cover page has been changed according to the recommendation of BMDC. This journal is now enlisted in the BMDC & National Library Index. It has its’ own online URL www.http:/chabjournal.org where all the articles of every issue can be downloaded & printed. You will be highly delighted to know that the journal is being achieved the membership of BanglaJOL & indexed in BanglaJOL having the DOI number. The Association has been publishing newsletter regularly at 04 months interval.
Information about Land of Chest & Heart Association:
The Chest & Heart Association of Bangladesh has got a land at Mirpur which is currently captured by unauthorized occupants. Legal procedures have been taken to vacant the land and is under the jurisdiction of the High Court and waiting for its final judgment. Hopefully the association will be able to procure the land very soon.
Post Creation Activities:
A great success has been achieved by the kindness of the Government and tireless effort of The Chest & Heart Association of Bangladesh to create department as well as new posts. Formerly Respiratory Medicine Unit along with posts was created in 13 government Medical colleges. Very recently, A total of 57 (fifty seven) posts have been created- 36(thirty six) in respiratory Medicine and 21 (twenty one) in thoracic Surgery in NIDCH and 9 government medical colleges. This has developed a great inspiration for our young specialists and our long cherished demand has been finally fulfilled.
Continuing Medical Education:
Continuing Medical Education program is one of the major activities of the association conducted by the academic cell. In this context, institutional, local and regional conference throughout Bangladesh has been chalked out and activities are going on. The association conducted following Seminars.

TB Guideline Committee Meeting on May 2026
In May 2026 a meeting was held on TB guideline review, which was inaugurated in the 43rd AGM and International Chest Congress of CHAB. A revised edition will be published very soon.
43rd AGM & International Chest Congress 2026
The Chest and Heart Association of Bangladesh (CHAB) successfully organized the 43rd Annual General Meeting (AGM) & International Chest Congress 2026 on 5 May 2026 at the prestigious Shahid Abu Sayed International Convention Center, Shahbagh, Dhaka. The event brought together distinguished healthcare professionals, academicians, policymakers, and national and international delegates in a remarkable gathering dedicated to the advancement of respiratory and chest healthcare in Bangladesh.
The inaugural ceremony commenced in the evening with the recitation from the Holy Quran, creating a solemn and respectful atmosphere for the beginning of the program. The guests, participants, and delegates were warmly welcomed by the organizing committee.
The program was presided over by Dr. Md. Zahirul Islam Shakil, President of CHAB Congress 2026 and Chairman of The Chest and Heart Association of Bangladesh. In his presidential address, he highlighted the growing importance of collaborative research, modern treatment approaches, and international cooperation in combating respiratory and chest diseases. He also emphasized CHAB’s continued commitment to strengthening healthcare services and professional development in Bangladesh.
The welcome address was delivered by Dr. Golam Sarwar Liaquat Hossain Bhuiyan, Secretary General of CHAB and Member Secretary of CHAB Congress 2026. In his speech, he expressed gratitude to all delegates, guests, sponsors, and organizing members for their active support and participation. He also reflected on the association’s achievements and future plans for expanding awareness, education, and medical excellence in the field of chest and heart healthcare.
The event was graced by the presence of the Honourable Health Minister, Sardar Md. Sakhawat Hossain, as the Chief Guest. In his inspiring speech, the Honourable Minister praised the efforts of CHAB in promoting respiratory healthcare and professional medical education in Bangladesh. He acknowledged the significant role of healthcare professionals in improving public health services and assured the government’s continued support toward the development of modern healthcare infrastructure, research, and specialized medical services.
The congress created an important platform for exchanging scientific knowledge, discussing current challenges in respiratory medicine, and strengthening professional networks among local and international experts. Delegates actively participated in discussions and academic interactions throughout the event, making the congress both productive and impactful.
The program continued smoothly according to schedule and concluded successfully with a cultural programme and gala dinner, where participants enjoyed an evening of fellowship and networking in a warm and friendly environment.
